Hello,

I recently acquired a 1TB external hard drive. Its a simple plug and play device. It didnt get recognised on the first 2 usb ports I tried, but on the rest of the USB ports the device got recognised and I started transferring files from my HP laptop to the device. All went fine and fast. However after copying 2 folders, I cant copy anything else anymore. The only file ive been able to copy to my external drive since then was a 1mb large screenshot sitting on my desktop, anything else gets stuck at calculating time and literally nothing happens, even if its a simple 6mb large file.

I tried connecting the hard drive to my PC but it has the same issue. Both on my PC and on my laptop the device shows up in the hardware manager and can be accessed, all files that have been copied to it are visible, and all files already on it can be copied from the external drive to the HDD, but as I said I cant copy anything from my pc or laptop to the HDD. It doesnt give any errors, it just doesnt do anything at all.

What started happening at the same time is that when I plugged the external hard drive in to the laptop or PC it would say that 'there are problems with this device, please do a check up on the drive to fix it' (or something along those lines, rough translation from German) and when I do, it cant find any issues.. Really hope you guys might be able to help me fix this thing or else ill have to send it back I suppose and wait a month or so for a new one..:(

Cheers for the support in advance!

Then either the enclosure or the HDD inside has failed.(most probably the HDD) You can just RMA it if the device is under warranty.
Well, as a company's rep, I can't really recommend you a different brand except for WD.
Anyway, you will not really experience any performance difference with different USB hard drive. Also, you can't really know which drive would last the most. Mechanical drives could just fail, this is why, you should always back up your data.

One thing you can take a look at is the warranty, which sort of, could be related to reliability. Just grab a device with longer warranty.

Hi there ExtincE,

As you can transfer data from the drive to a computer, my suggestion would be to back up that data until you sort this out.
After that, you can check the drive's health out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
Observe the SMART report and look for reallocated/pending and uncorrectable sectors.

Apart from that, I think it would be nice to attach the drive with a different cable, in case you have a spare one.

Let me know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

The PC wont start up anymore with the external drive connected and I cant even format it from the command prompt.. so Ive given up on it and ill send it back to the manufacturer and just get a different one I suppose.. any recommendations on a brand?
