I have a ZTE z752c,android version 4.4.4 with 16 gig memory card,it won't let me download anything to it,it says my phone does

I think it's trying to tell you that you must download whatever it is to the phone's built-in storage.

I'm trying to free up space on built in storage so I can use a new SD card & I really don't want to root my phone.should I just get a new and better phone,one with better o.s. than KitKat?
