today, my gpu crashed on me twice while playing two separate games. both crashes forced me to do a hard restart on my computer. After the second crash, my audio from the hdmi output ceases to function. I have tried unhooking and rehooking the gpu up with no success and the same with the hdmi cord. here's what shows up on my playback devices

any help would be appreciated

sorry about that, it's a gtx 780 and it started acting that way after cleaning it with an air vac. looking at the errors on my event viewer, this popped up http://imgur.com/f87A6RR

Agreed, error files and details on troubleshooting would be helpful. Also try using a different HDMI cord to test. Does the card light up/fans spin/what gpu is it? And of course, make sure you have the most up to date drivers. The pc can crash if your gpu overheats or has power problems.

Have any other components or devices had problems? If so, it may be a motherboard issue.

You should try monitoring the GPU temperature with MSI Afterburner, make sure it isn't the heat that's causing it to crash. If it's random, you should try and completely reinstall the drivers for the video card using Display Driver Uninstaller. My old nvidia Gtx 550 ti used to crash at 80°C, but it turned out to be the shitty PSU I was using.

from what I can tell, it's in the pci slot properly and I just did an uninstall and re-install of the drivers yet nothing.

hmmm, here's something that may help. I just ran task manager and it's showing that i'm using more ram than usual. it should be .50 less than it is right now.

So if I am understanding this right, your PC can't see the card, the OS can't communicate with it, and The computer has crashed from it. So there are some questions and steps we can take.

1. Is the HDMI plugged into the GPU or the motherboard output? Does the GPU output work?
2. Can one of the nvidia softwares (EVGA Precision, MSI Afterburner, etc) see or interact with the card? Since the fan is running, can you change the speed manually? Does the software read the temperature on the gpu?
3. Have you tried putting the card in another PCI slot? If it will fit, that is. If it works in another PCI slot, it is likely that the one you have it in is damaged, either the pins or the connection to the mobo.
4. Try swapping the power cords to the card. Maybe the cord shorted and isn't powering the card properly.
5. Is anything else showing problems? You mentioned using more RAM, but that may just be to make up for the card malfunctioning. Check if your CPU has more voltage going to it than normal with CPU-ID.

I know it's a lot. The biggest thing is figuring out whether it is the card, a connection or the motherboard. If swapping PCI slots works or something else has issues, it is probably the motherboard. If it doesn't work or the software and connections don't work fully, it is probably the card. Either way, it sounds like something is going to need repair or replacement. Hope this helps, and doesn't just make more work. Please let me know how it goes.

I can answer #1 right now, the hdmi is plugged into the card itself and the visual output is working.

#2: I opened up msi afterburner and all I get is this. I can't control anything.

3&4 I can't answer atm becaue I'm about to head off to work

#5: on the task manager, the cpu was staying at 12% for a while. I used hwmonitor I have installed and this is what I got http://imgur.com/SzNMwql

I hope that forms some picture.

Voltage seems a bit low, if anything, but that depends on your setup. With the GPU fan on and video working, that's weird. I would think the whole card would be fried if it was bad. Maybe some of the components are malfunctioning, and the card is passively feeding video out and running the fan? Not being able to control is a problem though. When you get the time, try 3 and 4. Best of luck man.

update: after trying the rest troubleshooting tips, I found out it was definitely the gpu. so, I took this as an opportunity to upgrade to a 970! then i had to solve some wiring problems but I got that solved already.

thanks to everyone who offered advice :)
