I have this old working laptop that has 1 hard drive loaded with Windows 7. Obviously I cannot use the Windows 7 but how can I use the hard drive in my new PC with a new Windows 8??

Solution

If you are going to install Win 8 to the drive, the installation pgm will quick format the drive and begin installing Win 8 on it. Once the drive has been quick formatted, the directory will have been...

Install it in the drive cage (w/adapter if needed)*, and then do a clean Win8 install to it if you want it to have the OS on it. If you just want it for a data/storage drive, just quick format it.

*Once physically installed, check BIOS at boot to see if it is recognized and that it is not set as the boot drive unless you want it to be. Then in Win, it will be automatically assigned a drive letter.

What happens to the Windows 7? Is it just deleted and taken over by Windows 8??

Sorry I know this question may be stupid.

If you are going to install Win 8 to the drive, the installation pgm will quick format the drive and begin installing Win 8 on it. Once the drive has been quick formatted, the directory will have been wiped and the drive will no longer know it had anything on it. The new OS data will be written over the old OS data.
If you are going to use the drive as simply a storage drive, again.. quick formatting will leave the drive virtually empty. A clean slate.
