Thermal paste in amd fm2+ socket and all over pins on a10-7870k

So yesterday I was putting my computer together and I was trying to put thermal paste onto it. The thermal paste spilled over the sides when I tried to put the cooler on. I could see it had gotten under the processor so I took it off to check where it had gone.

I found out it had gone all around some of the pins on the cpu and had also gone all over the socket.

I want to clean them but I'm not certain how to do it. And if I can clean it I'm worried about testing it after since I don't want to damage the rest of the computer.

Use isopropyl alcohol and very soft paint brush to wash tim out. Hold parts vertical to let alcohol drip out. Let it dry first before attempting installation.

Thanks for the reply will it still be safe to use once it's cleaned after having the paste there? I assume it helps that the computer was never switched on

@dogbandit2 - once you clean the thermal paste up and also clean the heat sink and cpu heat spreader, I recommend you watch a you tube video on how apply thermal paste correctly so this doesn't happen again.

As long as it wasn't a metallic paste and you clean it good enough nothing bad should happen.

@JQB45 thanks for your help I have already cleaned off the cooler. It would have gone fine but I think the thermal paste had gone off or something because it came out watery. I got rid of it and I'm going to use the paste that came with the cooler next time.

@CountMike thanks for your help one last thing, if something goes wrong with the motherboard and cpu would it damage anything else?

What Brand and Model of Paste were you using? Some pastes are watery.

@JQB45 It was some cooler master paste that I got from PCworld I'm not quite sure what it was actually called it just said high performance thermal compound
