Hi, my CPU fan not being detected yet it is still spinning and working fine, I get the message: CPU Fan Error" on booting. This only started happening recently (I think) and my computer is only about 2 weeks old. I was wondering if this is going to be an issue or if it is fine to leave it as it is still working.

I have looked at the BIOS and the fan isn't being detected on either of my motherboards CPU fan headers, also it isn't being picked up by SpeedFan.

Thanks for any help.

I assume the fan was working before. MAYBE all that has happened is the connection at the CPU_FAN header is poor. Over time the connector surfaces can oxidize and loose contact. If that's all this is, there is a simple thing to try. Shut down and open the case. Go to where your CPU cooler fan is plugged into the mobo. Unplug it, then plug it back in. Do this several times, and be careful not to disturb other stuff. Leave it plugged back in, close up, and boot. IF that was your problem, this action will "scrub" the contact surfaces and clean them so the fan's speed signal can reach the header pins again, and the error will stop.

There is one other possibility I can suggest. In BIOS Setup some mobos have a setting you can adjust for the minimum speed that fan must be running. If the speed is lower, the alarm about fan failure is triggered. MAYBE your fan was running just slightly above that minimum and has slowed down slightly. IF your BIOS Setup screens have this option, try setting the minimum speed threshold a bit lower, and see if the warning disappears. If that does the trick, just check to ensure the fan speed really is OK, and not VERY slow. (That would indicate the beginnings of fan failure and alert you to fix before complete failure.)
