Hi everybody,

My computer is quite old now i built it about 5 years ago.
I was thinking of upgrading some parts in it as the only thing i've ever upgraded is my GPU ( from a 460 gtx to a 760 gtx).

My current build is as stands:
Antec TruePower New 650W Modular PSU
Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive
SanDisk SDSSDHII-480G-G25 Ultra II SSD 480 GB Sata III 2.5-inch
G-Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600mhz Sniper Memory Kit
Intel Core i7 960 3.2 GHz Socket 1366 8MB L3 Cache
Asus Sabertooth X58 Socket 1366 8 Channel HD Audio ATX Motherboard
Asus GTX 760 Direct CU II OC 2GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics CardA
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2 Socket 775, 1150, 1156, 1155, 1366, AM2, AM3 Heatpipe CPU Cooler

I was thinking of upgrading to play Warhammer total war and have about 500 pounds to spend. I don't play that many intense games to be honest, i mostly play hearthstone and heroes of the storm. I was thinking of a new CPU and motherboard primarily, although a new graphics card wouldn't go a miss. Are the other components still ok to use do you think alongside with the new one's after 5 years of use already? or should a complete rebuild be done?! This is where i'm at anyway any clarity woiuld be useful as i think my overall rig isn't too bad, it just could be a better!
Thanks for any input in advance, it's much appreciated!

Solution
Going from 8gb DDR3 to 8gb DDR4....doubt if any real difference. U wouldn't tell the difference. My next build will be 16gb although 8gb is still enough now. I just want more for the hell of it, and cuz RAM prices are much more affordable nowadays.

Choice to go 4690k or 6600k is up to you. Can't go wrong with either.

Hi thanks for replying. Would you not suggest upgrading the graphics card at the moment then? I also forgot to include my cooler i have put on the original post now which is a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2 Socket 775, 1150, 1156, 1155, 1366, AM2, AM3 Heatpipe CPU Cooler.

Yeah that is true the only high end game i will play is warhammer total war to be honest. Ok, would you recommend the 6600k instead of the 4690k if i'd buy a new cooler anyway it isn't much more expensive?
That with a MSI Z170-A PRO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard and Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO? just about 300 pounds.

Th 6600k is good too, but you'll need to buy new RAM. For 6600k you must use DDR4, even though intel said DDR3 would work with it; but it doesn't. The 212 EVO is good and will fit on both cpus. Also, that MSI mobo is pretty good. Honestly you won't notice a difference between the 6600k and 4690k. So, if you are willing to buy new RAM, maybe more...16gb, then get the 6600k + Z170 mobo + DDR4 RAM.. Otherwise, a 4690k + Z97 mobo will do just the same for less $$.

Ok then it seems a easy decision going for the 4690k and z97. Would you expect it to need a much sooner upgrade with the 4690k then 6600k? I reckon next year I will invest in a 1070 gtx. I guess the same question applies to the ram will DDR 4 make much difference with it as I'll delay it to get the higher end parts if it's much more future proof.

Thanks!

Comparing two CPUs that came out a year apart...they are essentially the same. But if you are worried about new tech get the 6600k. Maybe you can sell off the old components and just get the newer Z170 architecture. I'm waiting for Kaby Lake (Fall 2016) to come out and then upgrade my 4 year old system. Hoping (really hoping) that I can sell most of my old components for a reasonable price.

If future proof is important...buy the latest. Just make a budget and try to stay in it.

Ok, I'm really tempted to go with the older stuff then if it is essentially the same. I don't need really high end stuff I think although the future proof parts do really appeal to me its if its worth it in the long run as I do play some high end games occasionally. Would the increased RAM 16gb which is DDR 4 make a major difference?

I'm thinking of going with the slightly more expensive set to be honest due to it being newer with 16 gb ddr 4 ram and selling my old parts. I'll have a much better set then for a graphics card upgrade next year. Would you recommend buying a new psu due to having my current one so long?

Going with new tech and extra RAM...good idea. It's more expensive but you'll never have regrets about your choice. It might cost more but so it be.

Yeah, get a new PSU. Of all components this is the one where quality is the most important. Use this as a guide, http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html, and try to get a top 1 or 2 tier PSU. And check reviews to confirm your choice.
Where I live and the price, my next PSU is a Leadex 650W. It is a tier 1 and has good reviews out there.

Ok I will. I'm going to get the latest parts when I upgrade now along with the psu I think. Just a graphics card next year and it'll pretty much be a new system. I'll have another look when it's time to upgrade but I don't suspect it'll have changed much in 6 months.
Thanks for the advice!!
