If I buy and use an M.2 SSD for my z97-a board, do I lose any pci-e lanes or sata ports? Because I have read that this happens with many other boards but I could not find a definite answer for this board.

Do I need to buy a specific M.2 SSD that works through sata or pci-e? I'm really not sure. Any relevant information is extremely helpful.

Thank you!

1 x M.2 Socket 3, , with M Key, type 2260/2280 storage devices support (PCIE mode)
look like pcie. but it only running x2, so it a waste.

get a sata ssd instead.

did you try reading the manual?

From Manual:
----
[PCIeX1 and 2 slot at X1 Mode] Enabled the PCIex1_1 and PCIex1_2 to run at X1 mode

[M.2 Mode] The M.2 slot runs at X2 mode for high performance support
----

I'm not 100% how to use these modes, which PCIe lane they are referring to, etc.
