So I am about to pull the trigger on a new build, and then someone pointed out that the 1080/1070 are soon to arrive. I know I want one eventually, but here are my thoughts:
-There are some Newegg daily deals on components I want right now.
-I am hesitant to buy day 1 products, and have never owned a stock (nvidia manufactured) video card.
-The longer I wait, the longer I will second guess everything.
-ASUS/EVGA/MSI/GIGABYTE won't have cards out until later this year or next.
So that leaves me with a few options:
1. Go with the ASUS Matrix 980 in my cart right now (down to $499 plus $50 rebate, awesome deal). Pick up a 1080 down the road.
2. Pick up a usable 970 now (~$300) and upgrade when I find a good 1080 from ASUS or someone
3. Order the core of the build now, and pick up the stock 1080.
Obviously the third option is the cheapest. My qualms are that I know I want to overclock with my new build, and am unsure how the stock card will support it, as well as the cooling system seems unfit to deal with the added hit. And I would be without a GPU in my new PC for a few weeks. Kinda anticlimactic.
Options 1 and 2 allow me to get the rig up and running sooner, with 2 being cheaper and allow me to upgrade the card sooner, as soon as ASUS and friends drop a custom 1080 later this year.
Am I crazy? Is this decision easier than I am making it? I don't like spending more money, but I'm not sold that a stock 1080 will be the thing for me.
Then again, I just saw ASUS has a Founder's Edition... But it is still stock with blower cooling.
