Hello all, I have a small question that I'd like some help with. I have a gaming computer that I built years ago and even though I'm not having issues, I would like to upgrade some components. Right now I was thinking of upgrading my GPUs from gtx 570 in sli to a gtx 1080. I was wondering if I would be terribly bottleneck end by my cpu, which is something I'm not in a hurry to replace if not necessary, as it has worked like a champ. I have a i7 950 overclocked to 4.0 ghz. I'd like to use that money to get an occulus along with my gtx 1080, but would I see performance issues? Thanks for your help.

Solution

The i7 950 will not be a problem for now, even on a 1080.
Well, depending on your resolution and refresh rate(if gaming at 1080p on an 144Hz monitor), it might bottleneck a bit in a few titles but not to unpleasant levels.

I just did the single threaded cpu performance test and got 1648. Not sure what that means.

I think my monitors are only 60Hz, but they are 1080p.

No worries then. Obvously, you will have to upgrade your platform at some point, but for now a GPU upgrade is definitely the way to go. But you should know that for 1080p @ 60Hz the 1080 is not really required. You could get away more than admirably with the 1070.
That being said, obviously, if want to be able to change the monitor to something of higher resolution or frequency, go for the 1080.

yeah, my plan is to kind of sink around 2 grand into my system over the course of a little time. Id like to start with 1 gpu, then go with cpu/mobo and then 2nd gpu/monitors. I was just making sure i wouldnt hit too much of an issue with getting the 1080 first to see immediate performance increases. thanks for your help

No prob. I would forget multi-monitor if i were you.
34" 21:9 1440p 100Hz with G-sync is teh way to go, and the best investment one could make. They are expensive, but worth it IMO.

Regardless, whatever you end up getting, just make sure it has G-sync as that's a must.
