SLI 980s do technically provide a better frame rate on average in some games, but the stuttering and spike in frame rates means that you don't get a very enjoyable experience.
The 1080 is much better optimized for DX12 titles and features Async compute with support for Nvidia VR Works.

1080. a better single card will beat out a sli setup of weaker cards. and in dx 12(as stated above) it is much better supported as well as in VR with their multi pipeline technology, it gives quite the big fps boost.

But Paul is showing the SLI 980s beating the 1080?
sli 980's beat a single 1080 when the game has good sli scaling, if it doesn't or is not supported then the 1080 walks all over it. however when playing dx12 games and in VR, the 1080 closes the gap to being on par with the sli setup and in vr it surpasses it. personally i would dump the card and grab the 1080 when third party cards come out.
