Will the r9 490 card be available as a Polaris 10 chip, or a Vega 10 chip? They said that Polaris will be mainstream, but does the r9 490 constitute mainstream? Thanks for the replies!

Amd will not going to leave high end market. But the thing is we don't really know what amd has in plan. They actually made a lot of hype with polaris. Raja Kodduri even publically mention that they were quite confident that they will be ahead of their competitor with transition to new node.

Of cource we heard a lot of story be it official or rumor from both sides. many actually expect polaris to compete directly with GP104 performance wise. And this is where the story got interesting. There is a recent interview with Roy Taylor about VR. He said that AMD interest is to expand VR capabilities to more users by offering VR capable gpu at much cheaper price. And in the same interview he also mentions that nvidia probably have no interest...
You know, they said the same thing about the 2xx series and the 290x was beating the 780 TI by 20% at 150$ cheaper. I honestly believe they are going to show the 490x. What they consider high end is maybe the HBM 2.0 architecture with a new bunch of Fury cards.

Basically, I honestly don't believe AMD will leave the high end market. Maybe for them the 1080 GTX is not a high end product, so who knows.

There is a recent interview with Roy Taylor about VR. He said that AMD interest is to expand VR capabilities to more users by offering VR capable gpu at much cheaper price. And in the same interview he also mentions that nvidia probably have no interest to expand VR user base because he thinks that Pascal is targeted towards high end crowd while amd are targeting mainstream crowd with polaris. So what kind of picture this statement give to polaris? The most direct answer is polaris might not compete with nvidia GP104 in term of performance. If that's the case so what kind of performance does polaris have will have? The minimum for VR right now is 970 or 390 which cost around 300-350. Amd want to lower this price barrier more. This is where polaris should be at. Of course this is only wild speculation. Some people outright reject this idea and keep insisting that Polaris will compete with GP104 performance wise (even if there is no proof to show it). probably not 1080 but at least 1070. And i think this is probably start the talk about polaris to be as fast as 980ti at the price tag of $300.

the final piece was the rumor about amd launching Vega into this year instead of next year like their initial plan. All because of how competitive GP104 are in performance.

And from here on is my pure speculation. Polaris should replace Hawaii in term of performance. But at cheaper price and power consumption than currebt 390X/390. If we line them up they probably look like this in term of performance:

Vega 10
Vega 11 (?)
Fury line up
Hawaii / Polaris 10
Polaris 11

Of cource polaris 10 could be faster. But if polaris 10 is as fast as some people like to believe then we will not going to see Vega this year.
