What graphics card to use with this case?

Whats up peeps.

I recently upgraded to Skylake and just bought out a whole new computer, case and everything.

I have a Corsair Carbide 88R, mini ATX case. I had bought an ASUS Strix R9 390 Stock a few months before but I haven't used it until now.

I played all of Doom's campaign with it, it ran super well. One thing I noticed that, even though the card does fit in the case with no problem, it turns it into a stove.

Any of you guys suggest any smaller but very good cards out there in the market to use with this case? I was planning on getting the GTX 1080 but I don't know if I'll be having this same problem.

Thanks!

EDIT:

Here are my specs:

Gigabyte Z170-MX Gaming 5
8GB DDR4 RAM Corsair Vengeance
Intel i5 6500 3.2 Ghz
256GB SSD on the M.2 slot
CURRENT GFX CARD: XFX Radeon HD R7970 (Took out the r9 390 and downgraded for now.)

I game on 1080p, I guess I don't need a super amazing card for this, but I would like to not have to upgrade for 3-4 years from now. :)

Solution
1080 is going to run alot cooler than a 390, to further decrease temps I would suggest a blower style card or a closed water cooling loop like a fury x or a closed loop 980ti
