Solution
This stuff. A manufacture lists what the drivers are capable of reproducing, not what an individual can hear. The more frequencies and range a speaker can play, the better. It is known as head room. No, it is not marketing hype. Sennheiser is a very capable and experienced co.
The HD598s are really great sounding headphones.
I have both the 598s and the HD 600s. Two different types and they don't compare.
Make sure you understand what what the HD 598s are. Sound quality is excellent and the price has come way down on them making them a real bargain..
Somebody else will chime in to whine about what they don't understand here soon. Sheesh.

Typical human range is from 20 to 20k Hz. Some people might be slightly above/below but now by much. You could 'feel' 12 Hz, but probably not in headphones, and I seriously doubt anyone other than your cat can hear that far above 20kHz.

It seems more hype than usefulness, but I guess if they advertise good frequency response along that range you can be sure it's good in the 20-20k range.

Hope that helps.

O.K, cheap stuff is cheap for a reason. You get what you pay for.The Sennheisers will last 20 years. Sennheiser makes some of the very best headphones there are. I won't even consider another manuf. and have tried many. The HD 598s have been fine for 5 years here. I would be very surprised if one would be unhappy with the HD598s. There isn't really any place to listen to cans before you buy because there are too many types. Sennheiser is the JBL of headphones. Each to their own though.
