1080GTX = 1080p Overkill?

Everyone always says the "x80" version of a card is overkill for 1080p and to get the "x70" version for 1080p. I've always listened to this advice and purchased the 70 cards in the past and yet here I am. Can't get most games maxed (on 970) to run a smooth 60fps at 1080p. Developers will still find a way to push graphics to the point where everyone will find themselves playing the game at 1080p to have those nice pretty graphics maxed out all the way and get a smooth 60fps. I remember for a brief period of time the 970 killed anything you threw at it, but let's not forget developers are always finding a way to push their graphics to the max on these cards. This time im strongly considering the GTX1080 for 1080p. I don't know if I should listen to everyone else this go around when they say its overkill, because I know eventually there will be games that even the GTX1080 will struggle with in the 1080p resolution. I'm fine with watching a movie in 1080p and if the the GTX1080 can get me those photo realistic/cinematic graphics i've been craving at 1080p then I am completely content with that. Am I crazy? Should I just settle for the 70 version of the card again? Money isn't too much of an issue, but the excess cash I could probably get a better monitor, or save up for a 1070 Sli.

If you want fast/max frames with ultra graphics settings, then no. It's your preference to do so... No such thing as "overkill", when considering what your graphics preferences are. You'd be surprised, at how taxing some settings can be, even when gaming at 1080p.

Some players like uber graphics with high frames... Nothing wrong with that and if you have the GPU horsepower to do both with whichever monitor you have, go for it.

Alternatively, you can always upgrade your monitor at a later time OR use NV panel's DSR modes to sim higher resolutions as well until you have the funds to upgrade that monitor. DSR is not an exact replica of a higher rez monitor, but it's a pretty nice and FREE option.
If you have a high refresh rate monitor (120 or 144Hz) then a GTX 1080 makes sense if you want to max eveything out or have a multi-monitor setup. For me I am more concerned about the minimum framerate (I don't like to drop below 120) so I need a powerful card, I use a 980Ti for 1080p gaming at 120Hz......

With 'only' a 1080p monitor you can also still take advantage of super sampling for example so as long as it's not a financial issue then then why not. You can see that a lot of games need a GTX 970 now to be maxed out at 1080p. This is due to all those the additional effects and detail that devs are starting to add. 4GB ram is also becoming a requirement for 1080p gaming which reflects this. You'll certainly be future-proofed for a while with a GTX 1080.

Having said all that, if you are not a total graphics whore then I expect a GTX 1070 will do the job. I would certainly wait to see what AMD are about to release, I think finally they might have some tempting offers for those of us that game at 1080p.

I thought about getting a 120hz monitor, but I already hate dropping below 60 and that seems like a feat on its own. I would hate to higher my expectations to 120fps
