Mystery wifi network

I have internet through Time Warner, but I use my own modem and my own wifi router. Iv'e started noticing some available wifi networks in my area that start with the letters "tl" followed by some numbers (which I've discovered are actually the last numbers and letters of a MAC address to some device I cannot identify) I'm watching one network in particular. I thought it was a neighbor's wifi, except that every time I change the my wireless channel, it changes to that same channel as well. However, if I turn off my router, my modem, or both, the mystery network remains. I'm stumped. I'm pretty sure it's being transmitted from my home, but what could it be? I have checked the MAC addresses for my modem, router, and network cards, and none of them match.

I suppose the way to prove it is not in your house is to turn every device off that uses wireless in the house other than 1 phone or something so you can see the SSID. If you really want to be sure you can shut the main house power off.

It is strange it is actually setting up its own SSID. I know Roku boxes and some tv do this but the ssid does not follow the pattern you describe.

You could get a outdoor directional bridge and use it as direction finder to track it down if you really wanted to find it.

We did get a new wireless camera as part of our security system. I turned off everything I could think of but not the camera. Let me turn that off and see what happens.

Thanks - interested in reading about what you find.

Also, as an afterthought, could they be Times Warner hotspots?

(Xfinity automatically creates hotspots on their rented/leased equipment that subscribers may or may not be able to disable. And most of what I have read to date is vague with respect to what the ISP is doing and the end user/consumer's ability to control or limit. Plan to look into all that some more one rainy day.....)

Mystery solved!!! (Kind of) Well, I now know that the wifi network that is showing up on my available networks is coming from my alarm system. The MAC address corresponds to the main panel. When I click on the network it asks for a password which I do not have. I don't know how it's tied to my router, as it changes to the same channel I change my router to, but when I turn off the router, the signal remains. It really weird how these new alarm systems work.

That is interesting!

Especially the password requirement and the connectivity to your network.

Will not say that your system has been breached or otherwise compromised but I will say that it is time for a frank conversation with your security/alarm company.

No way of knowing who else may be seeing your system/wireless network and recognizing what it is.

And what they may be able to do thereafter......
