I want to improve my wi-fi in my signal in a single story home of about 1500 sq. ft., the walls are very thick and seem to block a lot of the signal. I'm running an Actiontec MI424wr modem/router through Verizion Fios, the signal is great in the living room where the router is based, but other rooms die out quick. I'm thinking about changing the antennas on the router to either a couple of Indoor Omni-directional Dome's or a 12dBi Outdoor Omni-directional Antenna in my attic. Which would work better or any better ideas?

On a side note I have watched the signal through an app on my phone and noticed the signal dip 5-15 dpm even right next to the router, maybe that's more the problem?

Solution
When the walls absorb the signal there is not a very good way to fix it. Like most things related to radio waves the power rates are exponential. So even if you were to increase the antenna power on the radio the rate the wall absorb will likely increase at about the same rate. You would likely see a little increase but walls tend to be very good at absorbing signals.

This though is only half your problem. The end device may be able to detect the signal but the radios in end devices generally do not put out as much power as a router so the signal can not get back.

You can try it but I would go with powerline units and put a router/ap in the remote room you need better wifi.
