PNY GTX 960 idling at about 80C? Installed in Alienware X51 R2.

Hi, I just installed a PNY GTX 960 inside of my Alienware X51 R2. So far, it's worked fine, but it idles around 80 degrees Celsius. When I tried playing something (emulating a Wii game in HD) it ended up shooting up to 90C instead. Am I correct in assuming this is too high? I just installed this so is there a chance I messed something up?

Solution
Never mind, it's working now. I reseated the video card and adjusted its plastic clip latch to hold it in. Now it's idling comfortably low. Thank you all, but this is the true solution I found useful.

did you buy a custom 2 fan version or the reference cooler model?

because if its the 2 fan custom then this is expected with that super crappy case, it has horrible air flow

this is the only kind you can get, the reference cooled version because it vents its hot air out the back

The fans in the GPU seem to be working. While GPU-Z says the fans are running at 0 RPM, it still shows the fan speed percentage changing, typically being around 50% while idle though increasing when I start putting a load on it. It's brand new, so I shouldn't need to replace the thermal paste yet. I'm thinking during installation the power cables may have been put into a bad spot.

Yes, I did get the reference cooled version. I made sure to do research on what kind of card I need for this case. And yes, I agree the case is crappy.

Maybe the card isn't getting enough power from the PSU, I think it uses an 8 pin and a 6 pin or 2 x 6 pins. Or maybe the fan header on the actual GPU was unplugged, there is a tiny wire that plugs in somewhere on the GPU that controls it's own fans.

The GPU is plugged in fine, I'm sure of that. It only required 1 six pin as opposed to the previous cards 2 six pins. Do you know how I could check if the fan header is plugged in? And do you think the problem of the cable being in the way of the case/GPU fan seems possible?

something like this could help

replace the front one

and maybe add a couple for exhaust

your case already has fans, all you are doing is increasing airflow with better ones...

the easiest thing to do would be to transfer it all into a proper case

Alright, thank you. I was only wondering because I never had this temperature problem with my old, similar GPU so I feel like getting the new fan won't be necessary
