I have a verbatim HM321HI external harddrive. I bough it used 3 years ago. I was adding more photos to it when conputr froze. I turned off computer and turned it back on. Now conputer doesnt find the drive. Its not in disk mangement either. I have tried other computers and boot menu in bios. Not there either. Hate to say it but i did open the drive not in a clean room to find the arm was not stuck. Now it runs for 30 seconds and shuts off. What i find weird is computer will always show icon for safe to remove device (mass storage). What should i do i need my data off it.

Sorry but it sounds broken.

You need to find a Data recovery specialist who can transfer the platters to a working platform to recover the data.
Its very expensive though.

edit* you may get lucky if you try it in a different caddy or plugged into a pc

Yeah Spencer's on the right track. If the drive doesn't work when you've tried a few more different methods it's safe to assume it's broken. The platters are what keeps the data in magnetic binary. Do try plug it into a different computer though, and maybe even get a converter to usb.

My buddy did try using his sata to usb cable. No go. What are my chances of recoverying my data? Should i try swapping platters myself with another harddrive of same model?

Can anyone recommend a cheaper data recovery place. Ive found 2 for 300. Data recovery lab in florida and 300 data recoverys in california. I can afford that better than the 120p from others but can i trust them? Anyone know a cheap and trust worthy or good recovery company?

Hmmm.. data recovery is not cheap. and since you have opened the HDD it will be considered tempered and the labs will charge more(I am not sure, but they do charge in case of tempered hard disk).
