My old computer I built in 08 or so the computer will not power up with the graphics card installed. I had a Nvidia QuatroFX 3700 Graphics card that seems to work so the slot is just fine.

Any suggestions on a replacement?

PSU CORSAIR|CMPSU-550VX 550W RT
GIGABYTE|GA-G31M-S2L G31 775 RTL
4gb Ram
3.0 Core 2 duo

Computer runs just fine, just a bit weak in the graphics department. My 12 yr old mostly plays minecraft and some other basic games from Steam so wanted to give it to him.

Solution
Pick up a used GPU from eBay. Something like a Geforce GTX 460 would be a significant upgrade and they're available at low prices now (I see ones under $40).

If you don't like buying used a Geforce 750 TI would be a good fit for an older system. It's more powerful than a 8800 GT by quite a bit, and doesn't use very much power (TDP of about 65W). As for compatiblity a 750 TI should work, I've used one on a GA-G33M-DS2R without issues.

I don't mind a used card, just a notch or 2 above the 8800GT would be great. He is currently playing on Integrated graphics laptop that just is painful for games even with a SSD upgrade. I figure my old desktop that is just laying around would be a welcome upgrade.

I think the 750 TI is the way to go due the lower power usage compared to my current card had. 60W vs 105W

I was concerned the 750 TI might not work as it is 3.0 PCI but all is compatible.

i totally agree with this. the gtx 400 cards were kinda power hogs. get a gtx 750ti
