Problem with new computer

I just built this computer and I'm new to this. When I turned it on it said
"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"
What does this mean and how do I fix it

It's telling you that it cannot "see" a operating system anywhere. Ensure your hard drive cables are connected properly to the drive(s) and motherboard. It may be that the drive controller is faulty but concluding that at this point would be "jumping the gun" - check cables first. Also, if the OS has not been installed, you should get that message since it's telling you there is no OS to be found
