Will a GTX 1070 be able to run new games on 1440p on ultra? The card is set to come out next month, so no benchmarks are available, but based on the specs that have been revealed 8GB DDR5, 6Teraflops 256 bus etc, will this card be good enough to max out games at 1440p?

And what about AMD's new line up? Are they going to release alongside Nvidia launch, or no? I heard rumors that they are going to have to delay.

I just built a new system i5 6400, skylake, AsRock Z170 Extreme4, GSkills DDR4, and I have my old GTX 960 which is really not that great -- even for 1080p, so I need to upgrade my video card no matter what. And i am going to get a new monitor as well, so trying to figure out if i should get a 1080p 1ms 144hz and maybe g-sync or freesync, or a 1440p 1ms 144hz without gsync. My budget for a monitor is $350-$500 and my budget for a graphics card is $350-$400

Solution
The 1070 is claimed to be slightly faster than a 980Ti so benchmarks of the 980Ti @ 1440p should give a good idea of performance of the 1070. The last I read was AMD's new cards are not expected until the end of Q3 or early Q4.

Reviews of the 1070 haven't really hit yet. Rumors are that the 1070's will be similar to 980ti, or maybe just 980. Starting price for a GTX 1070 is listed as $380, odds are the actual boards put out by MSI, EVGA, Zotac...will be more than that as they add overclocking and cooling features. So your gpu budget is low for Nvidia Pascal. AMD's Polaris release date keeps getting pushed back further in 2016. These cards could come out 3-6 months apart from each other.

Uhm well 1080 will be $599 and he said he might want 1080p 144hz those cost like $250 so really depends how he adjusts his costs as his monitor cost budget is 350-500 i think he should not have separate budgets but one budget for both items which would be $700-$900.

I expect that the 1080 will follow the path of the 980 .... nViida had to nerf the performance of the 970 by artificially lowering the throttling point because it was too close to the 980 ... and that still left them far too close for the minimal price difference. While some were willing to pay twice as much for the 980 just to have the "fastest card on the block", that designation was lost when the 980 Ti dropped, effectively leaving the 980 w/o a market niche.

If it were me, with $900 budget a bit.

$380 for a 1070; we'll have to see who's top dog this time around but based upon the last round, I'd start my search w/ MSI / Gigabyte ... and yes, at 1440p, I'dd definitely have my eye on a 2nd card some time down the road in SLI.

$500 Monitor for a 144 HZ Predator (TN Panel) ... $880 in total

or

$717 Monitor for a 165 HZ Predator (IPS Panel) ... $1100 in total

Yes $200 over ya budget but I have to say 1440p IPS panels are well worth the investment

They'll be more than $599 (which is still 50% over his stated budget). New cards are always higher priced than the rumored msrp, as the third party manufacturers add overclocking and cooling, and consumer demand for the new cards increases. I agree that if he spends less on a monitor, it should go to a better card. I also like one card rather than SLI/Crossfire unless you are running a bunch of monitors.

thanks for the replies. The 1080 is a bit more than i would like to spend. I just got my new monitor last week, and oh my god, what a difference. i went from an old 1600x900 to a 1440p BenQ XL2720Z. The BenQ is sooooo nice. I just wish it had GSync instead of Freesync because I prefer a GTX card, really want the EVGA 1070. my gtx 960 has actually suprised me on the 1440p panel. It is handling it better than i thought, with the exception of Doom. it has major texture pop in Doom.

This is the card i will probably go with.

I might get a AMD Card just so i can try freesync, but from what i have read, freesync really doesnt make much difference at high fps on a 144hz monitor.
