Unable to extend volume on my C drive

Hey guys, I was looking for a while and I couldn't find much on my specific problem, so sorry if this is already an existing thread. I while ago my friend and I built my pc, and we partitioned my C drive, but now I have (somehow) run out of space and want to extend it. I do everything accordingly, however, I am unable to extend the volume on my current C drive. Here's what it looks like in my disk manager

Is anything here an issue that is stopping me from shrinking the volume on my D drive and adding it to my C drive? Thanks in advance!

I think its because C drive is after D drive on the hard drive. I think you can only extend it if there is free space after c, not before... i could be wrong.

strange drive order, drive 0 = z drive, drive 1 = d then c...

best least painful option would be buy a new ssd or hdd and put c on it, and format the old c drive afterwards. don't mess around with order of partitions next time

Usually you can extend one partition, only if there is free space AFTER it.
So in your case, you would need to shrink Disk D, move partition C to the new beginning(end of D) and then extend it.
I would suggest you to migrate drive D to your "gift from god", delete the whole partition and move C at the beginning at drive.
Then you can calibrate drive C size and after that create drive D.

What windows are you using btw ?

go this way and see if it fixes the problem:
1-go to start and search CMD
2-in CMD type diskpart
3-when the diskpart loaded type list disk
4-then type select disk 1 (according to the image)
5-then type list volume
6-type select volume n (the number of the 96GB volume)
7-type shrink desired= n (the size you want to shrink in megabyte like 1024=1gb)
after these steps you could go to the disk manager and then attach the space to the C drive very simple!

Will not work. As i said, you cant extend backward, only forward. Tested & Confirmed.

Hi tehre Matt_91,

You will need to use some third party partition management tools like the ones that misteriosly suggested.
Keep in mind that it is always a good idea to back up the crucial data stored on the drive before dealing with partitions.

I always use Easeus Partition Master for this purpose. It's much more capable than the one built into Windows. With it you can shrink the D: partition and extend C: into it, all in one pass. There is a free version for home use.

You can shrink D to add to C, but you'll need a 3rd party tool. The best one I've seen is Macrorit. I've used this in an enterprise environment to expand and shrink partitions as needed. It's a simple and easy tool to use.
