Is my r9 290x strong enough to make the purchase of a Freesync monitor such as the BenQ XL2730Z or the ASUS MG279Q worth it? Or would I be wasting my money with such a monitor? I plan on upgrading my 290x with one of the new AMD cards that are set to come out sometime this year anyways, but until then I'll be rocking my 290x.

Should I pull the trigger now on one of those monitors or wait until I upgrade my GPU?

Solution
The R9 290X is plenty powerful to handle freesync at 1440p. If anything, freesync improves the apparent performance by reducing tearing and stuttering by only refreshing (syncing) when the GPU is ready. The monitor may support 144 Hz (144 FPS), but with freesync on the monitor makes the decision of when to sync. If you're running at 75 FPS, it sets to 75 Hz.
