Can I watch videos from a portable HDD, connected to my TV's USB port?

I plan on buying my first portable HDD (1TB Samsung M3 Slimline), as my laptop soon will need replacing and I want to back up any important files.

However, I also have a cheap Samsung TV, which I mainly use for my PS4. However, The TV also has 1 USB port which I use for plugging a USB flash drive and watching videos. I was wondering, will I be able to do the same with the portable HDD? Can I plug it into the TV's USB port and watch videos?

Hi,

I think you would be able to do that. Check your TV's manual though, as its not always possible on the "budget" models. Where's the harm in trying?

Yeah you can do it. It works the same way as it works with a USB. You can watch videos/movies/pictures.

Thanks for the responses. I am afraid of damaging the brand new HDD by plugging it to the TV's USB port.

best to damage a brand new one so you can return it, than one that's 13 months old.

Sure, but there is a very low chance it can be damaged by being plugged into a TV's USB port, right?

It can't be damaged in any way actually.

I very much doubt it can be damaged, it's a USB port for data transfer, standards apply.
