Solution

Yep, Lubuntu made miracles with our old Dell laptops at home. Very nice OS.

Some form of Linux using a lightweight desktop environment like xfce or lxde would probably be your best bet if you want a modern operating system. If by 2x256mb ram you mean that your PC has 512mb total, then I would recommend you try out Xubuntu. If it has less than 512mb, try Lubuntu.

If you want to stick to Windows, the XP will probably be your best option. Just remember that it's no longer being updated, so it might be a bit of a security risk.

No way is Windows 10 32-bit going to run on 512MB when the minimum is 1GB...unless you mean "I have to wait 30 seconds for my mouse pointer to move from 1 side of the screen to the other", or "it takes 3 minutes to open a single-page Word document from the hard drive".

Not to mention the OP made no mention of his storage capacity. Last system I had with that kind of CPU & RAM had a 120GB PATA/IDE drive, & only had PCI slots. No PCIe/SATA ports means no SSD (SATA or m.2), no fast SATA II/III HDDs (& definitely no high-capacity ones), & limited ability to add secondary internal ports for either one.
