I have 3 Motorola Photon Q phones. I like them and don't want to throw them in the box with all the other dead phones I have from whenever I have switched providers or upgraded. All three phones work, but here's the problem. When I bought the phones, and I do own them, they came loaded with software from the company I bought them from, Scratch Wireless. This company has apparently gone out of business because they don't offer their cell service anymore. I want to get rid of their software from my phones so that I can use these phones with a different provider. From what I have seen, I need to root the phones so I can have access to the software and then be able to remove what I need to be able to accomplish what I want. I have never done this before, and I don't want to create bricks. I would be willing to go so far as to remove everything from the phones and then reinstall the Android v. 4.1.2 Jellybean OS if I have to, and maybe this is the better way to go, but I'm not sure how to do this either. Can anybody help walk me through this so I can continue to use my phones. I don't like proprietary software like this and really want to get rid of it. They don't own my phones.

1) Even if you flash a new rom you might not be able to connect to other providers if the model didn't have the right chips (some old phones are either GSM or CDMA but not both, and others have different frequencies)
2) See if cyanogen mod has a rom and bootloader for your model

Please excuse my naivete with this, but this is my first experience with this. Don't know a lot about what I am doing, so I groping in the dark, but logic dictates that I should be able to do what I want to. If I brick the phone, I don't really care because I wouldn't be able to use it otherwise. At the cyanogenmod site, I did find a download available under devices for my phone, which is an XT897S. The download says it is for an XT897C, but I don't know if that makes much difference. The "C" designation was the only download available. This download is listed as the "build" zip file. Sorry, but is this the rom, or bootloader, or both? What is your opinion? Is this what I need as the OS to put back in the phone after I blitz everything? Again, sorry about the handholding request here, but I don't know exactly what I am doing, but I'm willing to experiment and try anything. Thanks! I forgot to mention that the phone appears to be CDMA/4G based on the mobile network settings.
