Hello,

After a year with Comcast my aunt has decided to stop renting the modem that Comcast provides, so she asked me to investigate what would be the best alternative to the modem.
We currently have a Technicolor TC8305C. I was looking everywhere online and found all sorts of answers, and more questions arose during this time, so I decided to ask here because I can get an answer tailored for my particular case.

One last thing, if possible, can someone explain the difference between Modem and Route? Also, is our device (Technicolor TC8305C) a Modem or a Router?

Thanks!

its actually a modem (device that connects to the internet) a router(allows several computers to share the one internet connection) and its also a phone service.

To help give you recommendations does Comcast provide you phone service? if so the list of what you can use gets short quick.

No, we used to get have the cable and internet bundle, but we decided to keep only the internet service.

The Motorola now Arris Surfboard lineup. Looks like this is the current model. Remember this is not plug and play. You have to call into Comcast to get your new modem authenticated with them to actually get it to work. This can either be a simple 5 minute phone call or an enraging 2 hour waste of time depending on how dumb the person you get on the phone is. http://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-SB6183-DOCSIS-Cable/dp/B00MA5U1FW/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1464208655&sr=1-1&keywords=SB6183
