I'm looking to get a new gaming processor for my PC, but my motherboard has an AM3 socket, so I'm debating on whether I should upgrade my motherboard to one that supports AM3+ before getting a new processor.

Here are my specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965
MB: MSI 870-G45
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760
RAM: 12GB DDR3

What do you guys think? I'm, not into doing crossfire or anything crazy, but I do have some CPU troubles when running some more-demanding games, which I don't want to deal with

If you're looking at a new motherboard for a cpu upgrade I wouldn't bother with am3+. Not with intel's haswell and skylake options already available and zen this close to releasing. Zen is still several months away due out at the end of the year. The issue is, fx is on its way out and now would be one of the worst times to buy it. Many have already moved from amd to intel for better gaming performance getting away from the fx line (am3+).

If you feel you can hold out another 5-6mo to see what amd's zen brings then I'd do that. If that's too long of a wait, consider haswell or skylake. Regardless if you're an amd or intel fan am3+ is ending shortly and is long overdue for a replacement.
