Skylake 6600K or Wait for Kaby Lake, GTX 1080 Upgrade

So i just sold my 4670K CPU to upgrade my gaming rig for housing the GTX 1080

I had my mind set on the 6600K but after seeing some benchmarks it looks a bit disappointing, no significant performance improvement over an 4670K, i just want to upgrade the platform to 1151 and DDR4 for future stock availability, new warranty etc ... just so that i can have replacement options if something fails.

i just learned that Kaby Lake is scheduled for release in a month or two, with an updated Z200 chipset and probably a slight performance boost.

The question is, should i buy an 6600K / Z170 / DDR4 NOW or wait for Kaby Lake and Z200 within a couple of months? and will Kaby Lake have an i5 in its lineup?

What do you guys think?

The improved graphics architecture is for the integrated graphics on the CPU's which you won't be using.
The USB 3.1 thing could be good, not sure if it will really be noticeable.

But to answer your question, I can't find anything concrete, but everyone seems to be point to a Q3 release date.
Keep in...

Kaby will have everything from Celeron to i7, like every other generation before it except Boadwell which was never seriously intended for the desktop.

I would have simply kept the i5-4670k. At the rate CPU performance is improving, there won't be much genuinely worth upgrading to within the next five years.

The thing is that i only had the CPU, because the motherboard and RAM were returned and refunded under warranty, so to actually use the 4670K i had to purchase a brand new Z97 Mobo and DDR3 RAM for it, purchasing new hardware right at its EOL did not feel right, so i took a loss of $60 bucks on the sale of the 4670K as price for a platform/chipset/RAM upgrade, not for the performance.

Loosing 25% of the purchase value of CPU after having owned it for 3 years is not that bad, especially when i had to purchase outdated hardware to run it, if i needed to replace the Mobo/RAM in a few months time, no one will have stock left to replace it, which will not be a good situation to be in, since this will get me stuck with a CPU i can no longer run and will be too old to sell..

Anyways, now i will start clean with new platform CPU/Mobo/RAM combo, the question is should i get Skylake / Z170 / DDR4, NOW or wait a couple month for Kaby Lake and the new chipset?

Not meaning to hang crap on you, but why would you sell your CPU without looking at benchmarks of the one you want to upgrade to, lol?

Theres no point in upgrading from 1 K series i5 to another. Especially if its only 1 generation newer.

Thats not bad then, should have stated that earlier mate. Up to you Kaby lake will probably just be a small increase over skylake, like 5-10% like it is every year

Good question :) i sold it to upgrade the platform and to be able to get warranty replacements from the retailer if i needed to, and because DDR4 is much cheaper than DDR3 in this current market, not for the performance, look at the post above for more details :)

No problems, your comments was valid in light of the info in the OP, if i had a complete running system, i would be stupid to sell the CPU of course :)

Performance aside, what about the platform, chipset, socket, perks .. does Z200 also use the same DDR4 generation and does it add anything more than Z170? will cannonlake also use socket 1151, or will that socket die next year?

Also if i wait, can i actually be able to buy Kaby in a month or two? or will the wait be longer?

Your guess is as good as ours. As there's no offical release dates yet. I'd say it would be around the July- August time. Most sources have estimated mid to late 2016.
New features that I have found for Kaby Lake that I found from a quick google search are:

Kaby Lake will add native USB 3.1 support, whereas Skylake motherboards require a third-party add-on chip in order to provide USB 3.1 ports.

It will also feature a new graphics architecture to improve performance in 3D graphics and 4K video playback.

Kaby Lake will add native HDCP 2.2 support.

Kaby Lake will add full fixed function HEVC Main10/10-bit and VP9 10-bit hardware decoding.

On January 15, 2016, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 would be the only supported Windows platform for Kaby Lake processors.

I personally think that it won't be all that different to Skylake due to their releases not being that far apart and Skylake had large changes like DDR4 etc so they will work with those changes for a while before doing something else big. I think Cannonlake will be when we see larger differences but that isn't due til mid 2017 at this stage.

These features are actually very useful for me since i have a 4K TV and could use these encoding features as well as have a couple USB 3.1 devices and would of course use the "improve performance in 3D graphics" whatever that is .. :)

The thing is that i am not willing to play the waiting game for too long, i can wait until July but not much longer than that, when do you think more verified release date info would be available?

Keep in mind that it will in fact be 1151 socket boards so you can use Skylake CPU's in the new boards and you can use Kaby Lake CPU's in the old boards.
I don't think there will be any other benefits of Kaby Lake.
You will certainly not be disappointed with a 6600k and a z170 board. It will last you for years. Theres still plenty of people rocking i5 2500k's and 3570k's and they are still going strong and can be overclocked still to keep up with todays CPU's. It's impossible to have the latest and greatest, because theres always something new around the corner. Not really much more I can say. Q3 is what everyone thinks, which sounds right seeing how Skylake was launched August last year.
Which means you would have to wait 3 months
