Hello guys and gals. I have been saving money for some time(every long time :( university student here) and was going to buy a core i3 6100 with a gtx 750ti, 8gb ram, 450w PSU, but a friend of mine bought a sandy-bridge based system with a core i7 2600k with 12gb ram. The only thing he changed was the PSU and then used the rest of his savings on a gtx980.

The total cost of his build was half of what i would spend on my system. Is it a good idea to do the same thing he did? I can get a core i7 2600k, add 16gb ram, an ssd, a 550w psu and a gtx 970 for the same price as the skylake build. Thanks.

5yr old systems ( e.g. intel sandy bridge) are still more than capable of running the latest games with up to date GPUs. My system dates from 2011 and only upgraded to a GTX 970 in that time. More than happy with performance @1920x1080. One thing to do is to use an SSD over HDD for windows OS. since you're a student save money!!

Thanks for quick replies. Will a 5 year old system have any issues with driver support etc? Also if i decide to skip on the gtx 970 and try a polaris GPU or the new nvidia cards will the sandy bridge be supported?

Older systems should have very stable and readily available drivers. Some are part of windows 10 by now, so you might not even have that many to manually install (except for GPU driver). latest GFX cards will still work in older motherboards absolutely fine. The latest motherboard standards don't really translate to better FPS, unless you want SLI/CF.

I checked out a video on Digital foundry doing a test on all the generations of intel core i7 CPUs and you guys are right its still okay. For 170 dollars with everything including the OS i cant complain. Ill buy now since the store sometimes runs out and remains with core i3 desktops for a while. Thanks
