I have been told that the standard player cleaning kits will severely damage automobile mounted players. Is this true? How would I go about cleaning one?

Solution
Those "cleaning kits" are pretty generic and I would not risk using one per se.

Look for cleaning instructions in the user manual/guide. May be available online if you do not have the guide.

Failing that; I would use the make and model to contact the manufacturer via telephone, email, or onsite visit.

However, unless there is some specific problem, I would just leave the player alone. Other than maybe dusting off the outside surfaces and around the tray edges perhaps - not much more than that.
