So basically, right now I have the r9 295x2 and I will upgrade my old x79 ddr3 pc soon.
I was really hyped about the gtx 1080 as soon as they announced it but after seeing some gaming benchmarks I am a little dissuaded from buying it.

The 4k benchmarks I saw on the official nvidia website weren't exactly spectacular (About the same as my card). I know the big difference will be in performance per watt, since my card has a 500 w TDP, but I really only care about performance.

Of course, the r9 295x2 is a DUAL GPU card, which means that two 1080's or 1070's in SLI would wreck any game at 4k. However, I don't want to spend a fortune ( I actually got my 295x2 on special for about $579 last year).
Should I buy two 1070's, one 1080, or wait for hbm2?
I know I will upgrade my cpu/mobo/memory for sure, but I am a little reluctant to upgrade my video card for something that will do almost the same thing at the same price.

Solution
I agree, with most everyone here, wait.

Yep, if you want performance, wait until they release some bigger cards. If you look at transistor count, the 1080 is actually smaller then some last gen cards. Both Nvidia and AMD will most likely scale up some bigger cards soon. Plus, your not that far behind the times, I am still rocking a gtx 680.
I think once we start to see some of the high-end factory overclocked GTX 1080's that performance difference will be more like 30% or more.

1080 is somewhere around 0% to 10% faster on 4k.On average id say like 5% is safe on 4K.If you dont plan/have 4K forget about changing VGA for a good 2 years more.295x2 is faster from titan Z.

Hi, i've got the gtx1080 two days ago (i have r9 295x2 and 980ti). If you have the r9 295x2 hold on to it - tight. The gtx1080 (overclocked to 1950MHz), is only 14% better on benchmarks than the 980Ti and in real life games you will not see a difference. The r9 295x2 is noticeably better than the gtx1080 by 15% and on 4k the difference is even bigger (the 1080 crashes on 4k if overclocked). Whats worse there is no improvement in game stretching what so ever and no simultaneous multi projection

I agree with you on this the gtx 1080 vs 295x2. I'm not going get rid of my 295x2 as it seems as more of a side grade. This card change will eliminate crossfire, generate less heat, and consume less power. I've already built my system to handle the 295x2 and I'm very happy with it's 4K performance. Wait an see what comes later in the year.

Yes, in this run of tests, though the Techpower up review isn't all encompassing of either cards performance in all games. I guess it matters more if you're playing all the games tested as well. If you're only playing Crysis 3 in 4k, the 295x2 beats both gtx 1080s. It all depends on the games played and if that increase yields actual gaming benefit. Still looks like a close race in most cases if crossfire is working of course.
The new gtx 1080s are great cards, however if you've already got a 295x2 and the games you're playing aren't suffering from poor crossfire support waiting seems like a better move at this point. Maybe gtx 1080ti or the next high end from AMD will change my mind.

So, I was just reading and I had to post. I just had 2 r9-290's in xfire, overclocked a bit on a 28 inch Samsung 1ms, 4K, and I love 4K. I too saw the benchmarks of the 1080. I got a zotac amp for 800 about 3 weeks ago. It gets almost double the framerates as my other setup. 60 fps on ultra in every game never dipping below 55. Doom, GTA 5, Rise of tomb raider, everything. And I'm on fx 8350 sat 4.6...card is SICK

So what happened to that 295x2 now?
It's just stupid having a card with power consumption twice as high and yet slower in most games than a card that consumes half as much especially now that GTX 1080ti has been out for over a year
If the 295x2 is that great why did AMD release the Vega cards which still can't match the performance of the gtx 1080ti
