While normally Windows 7 can run on pretty much anything XP can, in your case, even XP will run slowly. Even 2 GB of RAM will be slow, you want 4, and your CPU and hard drive will also be slow in that system. I'd not waste time with buying more RAM, spend $60-100 on a used more modern system with a Core 2 Duo about 2.4 ghz + speeds.

Have you installed all the drivers for Windows 7? Without the correct drivers windows cannot make use of the full system resources.

However, that is a VERY low end system and is going to struggle windows 7 even with upgraded memory and correct drivers

you should go back to windows xp cause your low-end pc cannot run windows 7 smoothly, windows 7 has alot of demandings like 4GB RAM and A Good CPU, But the reason why it drained your memory is because windows 7 has alot of textures and pictures etc... you can go back to windows xp, or get a low-end graphics card such as a GT 730 or GT 610 but if you're into gaming get a GTX 750 or anything more than 1GB VRAM.
