Hello all,

There have been several "External hard drive is clicking" threads.
So far I haven't seen my way of clicking yet.

It happened a few days ago when I was printing documents from my external hard drive.
Out of sudden it stopped working after I wanted to print another document. Since then,
when I connect it to a pc it keeps clicking. And I know why it is clicking, but not how to solve it.
I have no warranty anymore, so I opened the drive, and I connected it to my pc. I saw that the read/write head is getting on de disk, but shoots back everytime, what makes the clicking noise.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Also, is it possible for me to get all of my files back, even when I am not able to fix it?

Thanks!

sounds like it maybe too late then ?? golden rule is the make frequent back ups [though I don't follow that myself and end up like you are now ]

if its a wd drive they have a place to send it for a fee and will try to recover it ??

if a WD drive look for these guys here there wd REPS open a thread there on or answeres and use private message and hook up with one of them to come and help out here [ cant hurt] click on envelop under there avatar to send private message

How am I able to back it up when my pc doesn't recognize it? I can connect it, and my pc powers it.
But my pc won't read it.

Unfortunately, the time to properly back up important files is before you have problems, not after.

If it's not recognizing the hard drive to the extent that you can't even get a PC to recognize the drive enough to use any kind of recovery software like Recuva and it's the same story using other PCs, your options are extremely limited. You'll need a data recovery firm on the case to have a real shot at recovering your data and good ones can cost you a pretty penny (and there's no guarantee they can recover anything).

And sadly, by opening up your hard drive, you've already reduced the odds that a firm can recover your data. Hard drives need to be opened up in controlled, clean environments by trained technicians with specialized equipment - it's not like swapping out a hard drive or a GPU from your PC. If your data is this important to you, I'd urge you to quit fiddling around with the innards of your hard drive and get professional assistance.

Unfortunately, this is something we see a lot - it's quite a harsh lesson.
