about usb connected portable storage

can you tell me about the usb 2.0 connection and what happens when i use a thumb drive in them?

i had a situation happen when id plug 4 thumb drives in into usb slots a b c and d. the thumb drives would be 1 2 3 an 4. then id put

drive 1 goes into slot a. etc. then id switch them sone times and the pc would look for the data and do stuff like ask to format for use.

this happened also with my ac and usb powered usb thing. it had 7 ports. and if i forgot what hole i used for whatever stick it would mess up. why was this happening?

can someone else please help me? this person didnt eve make any sence.

i remember now. i was using a 7-port powered hub on my desktop pc so that i had enough extra usb 2.0 slots. and i used 1 hole on the powered hub , put data on it. took it out. and put it in a hole later on to do something on it. and i used a different hole on the powered hub. and it wouldnt work.
