Replacing Thermal Paste

Solution

You can't check instore availability on their site? You could go look. It would obviously be in the electronics section.

Edit: Best Buy also has it instore as would Fry's, Office Depot etc.

You should fully clean off the old paste and apply new anytime you have to remover your cooler. WalMart sells paste if you can't wait on ordering some. I have never seen any sort of review of that paste you linked to so I don't think I'd trust it for something like a CPU. Might be decent, might not.

It's not that bad. It's at least the right idea. But I wouldn't use it.

I just checked Wal-Mart's website. Do they normally keep it in the store somewhere? All I'm seeing is that I can order it for delivery next Wednesday.

That'll work. I'll stop at Office Depot tomorrow. Thanks!

The description of "thermally conductive" and that picture of a massive tube just made me fear for the life of everything on the motherboard. But you're right, at least it was on the right path.

Vemerce - If you don't have the proper stuff, then I'd really wait till you can get some. I'm surprised Radio Shack didn't have any AS5 in, they stock it at the ones out here. Hit up Amazon or Newegg and do a next day if you really need it fast.

Glad to help. :)

If they have it the Arctic Cooling MX4 is the best stuff I see on their site.

Edit: Search link failed but it's there.

Heh. Just for the heck of it, I did some digging, and apparently OP isn't the only person who's ever thought of it. Somebody did actually test this goop against a couple of proper thermal compounds about five years ago:

I leave it to the authorities to draw conclusions. There's a few user reviews on Amazon from people who've used the stuff on CPUs, too, with mixed results.

I just wanted to mention this. I called Radio Shack today and they *did* have the thermal compound in stock; the website was wrong. So if you end up in the same situation I was in, call them. Lol
