I was formatting my 750 GB external hard drive. It was taking a very long time, almost an hour. So I cancelled it.
Now I can't open the hard drive in file explorer. The hard drive is detected though. And when I try to for.at it again the computer hangs up.
Please help.

Hey there, Karma_00.

It's not normal for a "Quick Format" (if it was Quick) to take that long. However, a "Full Format" may take even longer than an hour. On the other side, if you're having issues with formatting the drive again and freezing your system, it really sounds like the HDD might be damaged.
First you should try it with a different computer and a different USB cable, to see if the same thing happens. Try testing it for errors and bad sectors by downloading its manufacturer's diagnostic tool and running the tests, to see if anything out of the ordinary pops-up.

As for not seeing the drive in Windows/File Explorer, it's completely normal if you've stopped in the middle of the formatting process. Its partition should be either...

As for not seeing the drive in Windows/File Explorer, it's completely normal if you've stopped in the middle of the formatting process. Its partition should be either RAW or it might be unallocated.

Please let me know how everything goes.
