Hi all.
I have a Gigabyte z87x SOC http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4949#ov

And I'm currently using Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 1866MHz DDR3 CL10 DIMM - Black (HX318C10FBK2/16.

I have an older rig and I'm wondering if the RAM that's in the older PC will be good to put in with the new one.

Older RAM is about 3 years old Corsair CML16GX3M2A1600C10 Vengeance Low Profile 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz CL10 XMP

I know that my speeds will not go higher than the Corsair 1600 MHz but I do think that the z87 motherboard doesn't go to 1800 MHz unless OC. Not totally sure.
I'm wondering if it would be a risky harmful thing to do or if it's safe but my have a few things I would need to tweek in the bios or something. ??

Thanks
Mike

The motherboard you gave link of is a Z97X SOC motherboard and theres no Z87X SOC motherboard made. There is a Z87X OC motherboard which maybe yours. Please mention correctly about your motherboard so we can give you relevent answers.

Thanks for pointing that out. It is the MB that is show in the link. So it is the z97x

Then the speeds of RAM can go upto 1866 Mhz in Z97 chipset.
And about mixing RAMS then, the RAM with lowest speed in the Config. will be chosen as the speed for all other RAM sticks.
So, If you have 2*1866 MHz RAMS and you add 2*1600MHz RAMs then all the RAM sticks will work at 1600MHz speed.
But I dont understand why you want to put more RAM in it as 16 GB is more than enough for anything.

Actually when adding new DRAM it generally goes to the mobos default - especially when you have faster and add slower, so here prob 1333 though it might kick 1600 - big problem you may face (regardless of mobo/CPU) is that your Fury sticks operate off PnP where the Vengeance run off the more normal XMP, many have had lots of problems PnP with XMP - not to mention it's not a good idea to mix anyway since there are no guarantees mixed DRAM will all play together. However, since you have the DRAM, give it a try, I'd start with the Fury and manually set to 1600 9-9-9-24 2T 1.57, boot and if all well, shut down and try adding the Vengeance

Reason why I was thinking to add it in was because I'm using one computer and why now add the RAM instead if it just being idle in a machine I don't use. But if there is a risk of not working then your right that 16gb is enough and there is no point.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll leave it out.
