Hi,

I've not found any other thread on the internet that describes this same problem. I hope someone out there can help. :)

The keyboard does not work properly. The Num Lock button turns off intermittently every few seconds, as though there was a lack of power to the keyboard. While it is off, I cannot type.

I have a USB hub on my computer screen. USB cable goes from my computer to the screen, and at the screen I connect my keyboard and my mouse. It has to be this way, as the screen is too far from the computer to do otherwise.

The computer functions normally otherwise. I have double-checked all my power saving options and updated all my drivers. Windows boots normally. I have tried changing USB keyboards. I tried changing the USB cable from the computer to the screen. I also tried changing USB ports.

Any ideas on other things to try?

If it works fine with the keyboard in the computer, it's not very hard to figure out where the issue is. The hub or the USB extender cord is the issue.

USB does not work well past a certain range without issues, you need a booster to run the cable long. Plus the USB hub is not on the "screen" it should be on the computer, or are you using the USB ports on the monitor? Either way, if issue goes away when it's connected to the computer itself, then use...

Get a USB extension cord and plug it into the back of your computer, then plug the keyboard into the other end. Hopefully that will fix the problem. If not it could be the motherboard. How old is this computer?

Hi, I tried that, thanks. Works just fine if I connected the keyboard directly to the computer. It's quite a well-built computer with a 3rd generation i3 processor. Only three years old.

By the way, it's failing again. It took me about 5 minutes just to type these two lines...

Either way, if issue goes away when it's connected to the computer itself, then use it that way or find a USB active booster or use shorter cables.

I was using the usb ports on the screen, because the computer is generally too far away to connect the kb and mouse directly.

I figure something has gone wrong with the usb ports on the screen, so I have ordered a powered usb hub to see if that helps.

Thanks for the advice, Hang the 9 (if that is your real name). ;-)
