So I was dumb enough to order the reference card of the 1080, and now after i've read that it WILL thermal throttle if you dont put it at high % fan speed :/ will this be very loud? how much db?
In the video I saw from jaytwocentz he had to run at 80% fan speed to not throttle

Solution
The card rings in at about 41db( a human voice is about 60db). It cranks up to about 47db under full load.

I'm waiting for the 1070 and will use EVGA's step-up program to buy it.

Can you get a refund? Wait for a better cooling system.
Wrong terminology is getting people confused. The GTX 1080 Founder's Edition has a base clock of 1607 MHz. It also has a rated Turbo Boost clock of 1734 MHz. The card will never go below it's base clock during gaming load situations. Above that, the Turbo Boost clock is additional speed that you card may or may not attain depending on various Turbo Boost variables, including temperature, voltage, fan speed, and power usage. But the point is, it's extra above and beyond the card's base clock, and it may up to 1734 MHz, it may be more, or it may not be any Turbo Boost at all. Decreased Turbo Boost clocks is normal and to be expected. It is not the same as "throttling".

So when people use the term "throttling" correctly, they are talking about a situation where the card exceeds it's safe temperature, and as a safety measure drastically reduces its core clock speed below it's rated base clock. This is not normal, and when it happens it is an indication that there is something wrong with your card.

A Founder's Edition GTX 1080 will presumably not hit Turbo Boost clocks as high as a well-cooled custom card. It may not even boost at all above its base clock if the temperatures get up to 83c. This doesn't make it a bad card design, but it does suggest that custom cards may be able to squeeze out higher Turbo Boost clocks due to their cooler temperatures. As long as they stay below 83c, and stay within the other limits, they will boost up to and beyond the rated Turbo Boost clocks.
