A Few months ago a purchased a gaming computer. Every few minutes I get a sudden FPS drop that makes almost every game not enjoyable. I usually run games on high to medium settings, however no matter what settings i put the game on i still drop FPS randomly.

I have already

Checked for unparked cores
Checked for malware and viruses
Made sure that all of my drivers are up to date

Specs

Processor AMD FX-8320
Motherboard MSI 970A-G43
GPU GTX 960 4GB
Power Supply 700W
Processor Cooling AVC K7127N

Solution

at this point I think it is insufficient motherboard cooling

since opening the case and putting a fan on it helped you to have no drops, if you had not good enough cpu cooling it would still have had drops

it has room on the top for a fans right?

add some fans blowing air outwards

then ziptie some fans blowing on the motherboard VRM's...

which games specifically?

online games?

there are games like arma that just run horribly on amd cpu's

ok, you will have fps drops in CSGO especially with explosions etc

same on fallout 4, especially inside buildings etc.

overwatch is easy to run, but an online game and you have an amd cpu

we can try to hopefully reduce the drops:

the best you can do is make sure any kind of power savings feature is turned off in the bios

cool n' quiet etc etc, turn off anything related to power savings

also in windows make sure your power options are set to high performance

install msi afterburner, and turn on cpu/gpu temp monitoring in the OSD

also things like core speed, cpu usage etc

play a game for a while, then post back with max temps

what would help is as soon as you get an fps drop, take a pic of the screen or tab out to afterburner

upload it to imgur and post the link

MSI (Graph) : http://i.imgur.com/q00CqEF.png

Also the drops in fallout and CS:GO would occur randomly it didn't matter if an explosion or a big event happened

the fps drops seem to exactly match cpu temp spikes

temp throttling is most likely to be the cause

turn off turbo core, and test again

if you get constant fps with no drops then you know the issue is insufficient cooling when the cpu ramps up

if you still get drops, then it might be the motherboard having insufficient vrm cooling

open the pc case, put a fan next to it blowing into the motherboard, then test again to verify

did you turn off all power savings features in the bios?

make and model of your power supply?

I usually do not mess with the bios, i did look for the amd quiet and cool, but didn't find it. What are the names of things that i should disable there?

go to the bios

the option will be under the "cell menu"

cool'n'quiet, disable it

turbo core should be under the "advanced settings"

check your cpu cooler, make sure it is installed properly

make sure the fans are spinning, clean the dust off

open the side of the case

put a fan next to it blowing on the motherboard

something is throttling your cpu

With in the first few minutes of having the case closed the fps dropped.

Edit: What can i do to increase airflow, and low the temp with the case closed

add some fans

do you have space to add more in your pc case?

specifically target some fans at the motherboard's VRM's, some zipties will help

I do not believe that i have enough room in my case (ARC 647 CASE SECC ATX Mid Tower) it only has the radiator fans and another one in the front

Would it be beneficial to purchase a new case, or perhaps a new more know liquid cooler?

or you can just buy a better case yes
