im refurbishing an HP Pavilion a6600f for my uncle's fathers day present. I would like to upgrade CPU to E8600. Intel/HP websites confirm compatibility. I need to know if I can also upgrade DDR2 800Mhz ram to DDR3 1333MHz?new CPU has an 1333MHz FSB and I believe requires DDR3 ram. the current ram is only 3gb. so could I also install 8gb (2x4gb) ram? please let me know HP/Intel.ark doesn't have that information, at least I didn't see it. ive asked on HP Forum and received a canned answer directing me to the HP website I just read. thank you for all the assistance. Also, if this possible can I then load a 64bit OS? again, thank you.

Solution
DDR3 is physically different then DDR2 so unless the motherbd has another set of ram slots (very doubtful) you are stuck with DDR2.

* a quick check shows this to indeed be the case. I also see that the E8600 is compatible. :)

You will need a new motherboard to install that RAM.

You might get away with something like this and have a much better computer.
