New build won't post

Hi All,

After having a good time carefully putting together my PC, I became very, very disappointed when it failed to post last night. I've followed all the instructions here and still can't get it to post.

I've checked for bent pins twice: nothing (I was extremely careful with the installation, so no surprises here).

My Asus H97M-E board requires 6 standoffs. I checked these were aligned in the case: no shorting issued whatsoever. I then moved the mobo out of the case onto the box in which it came and proceeded with my troubleshooting - no chances for shorting the back of the mobo, so this one's crossed out.

The CPU and mobo power cables are connected, tightly. No issues there.

I currently only have the monitor connected to the DVI port on the mobo, no graphics card, so that eliminates that. I've also tried HDMI, still nothing. (the HDMI port on my monitor works 100%, as I've got it hooked up to my laptop right now)

I followed the instructions in the manual to clear the RTC RAM, using the jumpers. First I did this with the CMOS battery still installed, as per the instructions. When this didn't work, I removed the battery, and tried the jumpers again, as per the instructions. Still nothing.

So, RAM. I've got two 4GB sticks (2x 4096MB Corsair Vengeance LP black DDR3-1600 DIMM CL9-9-9-24 Dual Kit). I've tested each stick separately, in each slot (minimum 8 power-on's) and I still get nothing. (As far as I know, if the RAM doesn't work, there won't be an output to the monitor).

I keep getting a "No Signal Detected" on my monitor. Each time I short the power pins, the PSU (530 Watt be quiet! Pure Power L8 CM Modular 80+ Bronze) starts up, no problem. There's a green standby light on the mobo, which lights up without fail. The fans run. Even the CPU, after a few minutes from when the power was turned on, is warm, suggesting it's working (right?). I'm getting very desperate for answers.

Before I really panic, I'd like to do two things:
A: Buy a speaker for the mobo and plug it into the respective socket. Hopefully this will give me some beeps, so I can get closer to working out what the problem is. (Why oh why didn't this mobo ship with one?!)
B: Buy new RAM. I think I've narrowed the problem down somewhat to the RAM. After trying it in all slots, and never getting any output on the monitor, although the mobo itself seems OK, I think the RAM I got is defective.

I'd be most grateful if anyone here could perhaps shed some light on this matter. In the meantime, I'm going to give it another crack. Set up the heatsink and CPU fan, install some RAM and try to boot. I really hope it works!...

OK thanks. Whereabouts can I find a detailed table, perhaps, of the BIOS codes?

When I install the speaker, I'll try first without RAM and see what happens. Then with RAM.

Can you confirm; by a successful Post, will it give one short beep?

Thanks.

Hi, my CPU (Intel Xeon E3-1231v3 4x 3.40GHz So.1150) doesn't have integrated graphics. Does this mean I HAVE to use my GPU (and it's connectors) if I want an output to the screen?

That was the problem all along!! So simple, grrrr!

That was even one of the things I read about when deciding on the Xeon over the i7. I didn't have any need for integrated graphics, as I was always going to use a dedicated GPU anyhow. Well, silly me. That's a mistake I won't make again!
