Hello, I'm having a bit of trouble with this 'all-in-one USB 3.0 (Super Speed) card reader' I got last year for Christmas working with my new MSI Z170A-G45 GAMING Motherboard I installed a few days ago.

My old Motherboard was an MSI P67A-GD53 (B3) which worked perfectly fine with the device.

I was missing an extra USB port on my old motherboard, so I had to install an extra one for my previous motherboard, but I decided to not install it into my new one as it had two USB ports already, which is what I needed as my case was already taking up my only one in my old motherboard.

I have the card reader plugged into my second USB port and the USB 3.1 port on my new motherboard, and it's showing up in my Device Manager just like normal, and the lights on the device are on just like they normally were.

However whenever I plug in a device, I get a continuous alert for a USB device being connected as well as an error message popping up on the bottom-right of my screen that says:

USB Device not recognized
The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.
Recommendation:
Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it, your device may not be working properly.

I've tried unplugging the device from my motherboard and reconnecting it ensuring it's all connected correctly, and I am positive it is, and it was still working perfectly fine before I upgraded to my new motherboard.

I checked in my 'Devices and Printers' section in the Control Panel, and it is listed as 'USB Storage' and right-clicking it and troubleshooting it states that:
USB Mass Storage Device is an older USB device and might not work with USB 3.0
Plug the device into an available USB 2.0 port, and click Next. Otherwise click cancel.

This is leading me to think that perhaps because my new motherboard has a USB 3.1 port instead of 3.0, the device isn't working properly. When I purchase the motherboard, I didn't think much of it being a 3.1 as I thought the 3.0 device would work regardless, but I'm not quite sure.

With what little information I was able to provide, could anyone offer any advice in how I could get this device to work with my new motherboard? The USB 3.0 cable for the card reader fit into my motherboard's 3.1 port perfectly fine. Are there perhaps any drivers available to fix this issue?

If it isn't compatible with my motherboard's internal USB 3.1 port, is there something I could buy that I could connect to a PCI slot similar to my old USB hub I used for my previous motherboard that could add a USB 3.0 connector for my card reader to plug into?

Thanks for reading, I hope someone could offer better insight to the problem I'm currently having. I greatly appreciate it!

It should be working you have the USB 2.0 connected for the card reader right? that works the reader itself. the 2X USB 3.0 ports on the card reader is just extra and not really a part of the reader itself just extra ports. If that is the part that's not working then install the USB drivers.

Thanks for replying!

Yup I have both cables from the card reader plugged into the correct ports respectfully. In Device Manager, if I right click it and select 'update driver software' Windows determines it's up to date. I tried uninstalling the driver but that doesn't seem to work.

I think I found something in the 'Events' tab though.

Back on the 7th of March the device was working fine on my old motherboard, and as you can see in the Event log it states something about Device migrated, but on today in my new motherboard, it's saying not migrated, I'm guessing that could be the issue? But I have no idea what any of that stuff means unfortunately.

I'd like to bump this up as my issue is still persisting and I also found out something new. So the two USB 3.0 ports on the card reader, the top one is the one that seems to somewhat be working, as if I plug in a USB device such as my headset or a controller into it, I'll keep getting those error messages I spoke about in the OP.

If I plug in a USB memory stick, the same error will pop-up once, and then it will read the USB stick like normal and I can use it. I've tried transferring data to it and it worked, but whenever I plug it back in, it'll still do that same error but then read it fine.

I just won't work with other USB devices, The bottom port of the USB 3.0 doesn't seem to work at all, if I plug anything in it, it does nothing. Although I have noted that on my USB memory stick, the light on it will be on, but the computer won't recognise it and I don't get an error or nothing.

I just can't seem to find the reason why it's stopped working since I upgraded my motherboard. All the connections are plugged in correctly.

It's just the USB 3.0 ports that are not working properly, the card readers work fine, as I have tested them out. So it's got to be the USB 3.0 connector, but it is plugged in fine.

As I've said, the only difference from this motherboard and my last, is my new motherboard's connector is a USB 3.1, rather than a 3.0, but that should still be backwards compatible. I've ensured all of my drivers are up to date using MSI Live Update. I just don't know what to do, and would really appreciate the help.
