R9 290 outperforms GTX 770 by 16.3% but GTX 770 is an awesome gpu .GTX 770 is money wise choice.
The GTX 770 performs better than the r9 280x in gaming.
Would totally recommend the GTX 770 2gb for 1080p gaming and the 4 gb for 1440p gaming.
Nvidia cards produces less heat and require less power. I myself am an nvidia fan, would always recommend Nvidia over AMD. All these cards however will perform as good, it depends on the game utilization of the power horse of the graphic card.
The pricing of these cards varies, but you can get hold of any very cheaply if used.
