Graphics cards & different manufacturers (MSI, EVGA, ASUS, PNY etc)

Hi guys,

I might be able to order through my work a PNY GTX 1080 graphics card for £461 as opposed to their retail of £619 in the UK.

Question really is down to how good the quality of this manufacturer is? I've had EVGA, ASUS & MSI in the past, but I hear conflicting reports on PNY.

Ideally I'd like to hear from those that have used PNY themselves, not just those that have always gone with a certain brand because that's what you personally believe to be better. Some hands on quality & performance comparison.

I've personally valued MSI and ASUS to be better brands, but that's just how marketing has worked. I've now heard ASUS GTX 1080 have issues with overclocking, so it goes to show it's best to ask before riding the marketing wave.

Thanks for any input given!

Personally I would be going for a 1070 when released with the custom coolers -MSI TF, ASUS strix, EVGA ACX etc, unless you have a case with poor airflow and want the rear exhaust model.

Yeah it's Founders Edition.

You know when you hear bad rumours and the stigma sits for a very long time, I'm just wanting to see if there is any factual proof between top end and lower end brands. Is there anything actually different, as the prices seem to reflect this you see.

Still doesn't matter since it is still a reference card. It has to follow what Nvidia has designed. The main difference is the after-sale service.
If the ASUS GTX 1080 FE has issues, any other GTX 1080 FE that has the same design will have that issue regardless of brand.
Pricing for all GTX 1080 FE is the same - £619.99. Anything higher is mostly down to the retailer itself.
The aftermarket designs may show a quality difference between other brands but with the FE, it's should be the same design.

I wouldn´t thrust buying such cheap aftermarkets card, the speeds are reduced the components used are the worst trash quality, I once bought an old AMD 6850 from the cheapest 3rd party manufacturer, the card was overal much weaker than a normal 6850, it overheated all the time, just some days after the warranty expired, the condensator and most components started to break or leak. I dot recommend it. Wait a bit save a bit more, buy a proper graphic card

Yeah they have been around for a while. Why they struggling to compete with the others though? They often have lower prices, just puts doubt in my head. I'm very much on the fence, but might take the plunge.

In addition to this... 1080 has something around 25% increase over the 1070.

Out of curiosity, how would 1070 AIB from the top brands with amazing cooling, compare to a standard 1080 FE?

I wouldnt be worried about it assuming it comes with a good warranty.

What do you mean about struggling to compete?

Struggling as in, not able to charge as much as the other manufacturers, not as common these days.

They are a smaller company than Asus/MSI so I suspect they just don't manufacture as many cards.

If you are going for a reference card (FE) then I wouldnt care much about the brand, theres only really differences with the custom cards with the different coolers, different PCB designs etc.

Of course I'd love to go for the 1080 AIB, but can't really spend £600+ on a card.

1070 beating the Titan X and 980 TI in quite a few FPS comparisons is just amazeballs.

The temptation of a 1080 FE from PNY for around £160 extra is appealing though. (if the 1070 is around £300)

I'm not bothered about OC'ing it much anyhow. #Decisions #1stworldproblems lol

GTX 1070 MSI Gaming X is what I got in the end. £420 and it runs VR and everything maxed out with more than enough FPS.

Not a bad price for the MSI Gaming X 1070 but personally I wouldn't spend £400+ for a GTX 1070.
At least Amazon UK was putting up more realistic prices at first. A Zotac GTX 1070 Amp Extreme for £389.99 is probably the only one for me if I was to get a GTX 1070.
