I had been using windows 7 for almost 4 years without much of a problem. Recently I installed windows 10 on my desktop. Now I am facing an issue. The computer starts up automatically. It has been happening since the first hour I installed windows 10 after I shut down the computer. Even though I shut it down it starts up sometimes later. The duration of the automatic startup varies. One night I shut the computer and went to sleep. In the morning when I woke up I saw it starting up. It was surprising and also annoying. What to do??

I checked powercfg -lastwake on cmd and found the results -
" powercfg -lastwake
Wake History Count - 1
Wake History [0]
Wake Source Count - 0 "

also did powercfg -devicequery wake_armed and the result was -
" HID Keyboard Device
Microsoft PS/2 Mouse "

Windows 10 will automatically start itself to do updates. You need to go into your task scheduler and check there to see what programs are set to update at what times, and change those.

- Open the Task Scheduler
- Click on Task Scheduler Library
- Right-click the appropriate task, choose Properties
- On the Conditions tab, uncheck the box "Wake the computer to run this task"

Another issue is if you have any hardware that is set to wake the computer as well, and set that so it doesn't turn the computer on.

-Right click your start button, click Device Manager
-Search through your hardware, then select it. Right click and select Power Management
-Deselect "Allow this device to wake the computer" on any item.

i haven't heard of windows 10 automatically starting to do updates, but i suppose it's true. do wyrm's suggestion and turn off fast startup and i'm sure it'll fix the problem.
it can't turn on if it's in "shutdown" but an update may turn it on out of hibernate/fast-startup so either method should fix. the fast-startup keeps the OS in hibernate so the mouse may slightly move with a vibration, waking up the PC.
also, i usually keep my mouse off for "allow this device to wake the computer." mice tend to wake up from sleep/hibernate randomly.

I tried the task scheduler as you said and found that none of the task had a box checked as "Wake the computer to run this task"

as for your second suggestion, i found only two devices that wakes the computer up box checked. Those are the keyboard and the mouse. should i uncheck them? they help me wake the computer from sleep mode

After enabling the ErP I have not faced another auto start up yet. I will take a few more hours to see if the problem is solved and then I will let you guys know.

it took a while for the ghost hunters to confirm that it is not the work of a ghost ;)

so I tried the other solution you provided. and I think it worked as the computer has not restarted in the last 24 hours or so. thanks a lot
