Are a i5-4590 and 4gb/960 out of the question?
The i5 should be about the same price as a new 3470 and the 4gb model of the 960 is often only $20 to $40 more then the 2gb.
This puts you on the newer socket 1150 platform and 4gb of vram for the more demanding games.

As mentioned, try to get a newer CPU, those you list and 3 to 4 generations old. The newest generation is the 6xxx CPU's, but the 4xxx series are still very good but there is no upgrade path for it without replacing the motherboard.
If you want the best price/performance, I recommend the R9 380 4gb, it is the same price as the 960 but beats the 960 across the board.
