1440x900 resolution not available after replacing GPU evga gtx 550 ti

Hello, I won a EVGA GTX 550 Ti GPU on eBay and I installed it and it works fine but the I can not set my monitors resolution. I have HP w1907 monitor it's resolution is 1440x900 it worked perfectly on the last GPU (9500 GT). As soon as I installed the new one I got the its driver from the Nvidia site and restarted. It has almost every resolution option except the one I need. I reinstalled Windows hoping somehow that would fix it but it didn't. The monitor I'm using has VGA and DVI-D ports and the GPU requires DVI-I or HDMI so I'm using a DVI-I to VGA adapter. Maybe that's the cause of it?

It was the adapters fault. So I had a Mini-HDMI male to HDMI female adapter at home and a HDMI Cable. So I got a DVI-D male to HDMI female adapter. I plugged in Mini-HDMI male to HDMI female adapter to the GPU and Mini-HDMI male to HDMI female adapter to the monitor and Connect them with a HDMI cable and it worked fine.
Conclusion: I had a faulty DVI-I to VGA adapter. I found out that with testing it on my old GPU and I had the same results.

Just get a DVI-D cable and plug it into the monitor's DVI-D port. It will fit into your GPU's DVI-I port, it's just missing the 4 pins which carry the analog signal.

Yes the problem is probably related to you using the VGA port. Analog connections don't tell the computer the monitor resolution. The computer has to guess the horizontal and vertical sync frequencies, and come up with a list of resolutions and refresh rates which will work. Sometimes it misses a few. There's a way to hack it to make that resolution or refresh rate available, but you can destroy the monitor if you do it wrong or make a typo. Just get the DVI-D cable.
